In 1989 one of the burghers’ houses in Rzeszów’s Market Square became the home of the Ethnographic Museum. Its collections, consisting of more than 10 thousand exhibits, belong to the largest in Poland and have been collected throughout the 60-year existence of the District Museum in Rzeszów.
The most valuable exhibits include a collection of old folk-sculpture and painting, and a collection of costumes and embroidery, the distinguishing marks of two ethnographical groups: Rzeszowiacy (inhabitants of the Rzeszów region) and Lasowiacy (the Forest People).
The Museum also has an archive of folk culture history, comprising reports on field research conducted during scholarly trips. A separate department is devoted to the Archive of Franciszek Kotula, containing the studies, letters, research materials and tapes with folk music recorded by this ethnographer.
