The District Museum

The District Museum in Rzeszów was established at the initiative of the Regional Society of the Rzeszów Region in 1935. Its first curator was Franciszek Kotula, a well-known Rzeszów ethnographer, devotee of the Rzeszów region. Since 1954 the edifice of the historic Piarist complex from the seventeenth century has been the main base of the museum. Its permanent exhibitions include "Galeria Dąmbskich", presenting European painting from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century, Gallery of Polish Painting and an exhibition devoted to traditional crafts of the Rzeszów region. In 1999 the Museum published a catalogue-album "Polish Painting of the eighteenth – twentieth century", featuring such well-known names as Józef Chełmoński, Jan Cybis, Stanisław I. Witkiewicz and many more.
